Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

The Oregon Back Country Discovery Route is a trail that runs North/South across Oregon - From the California border to the Washington border. The trail is suitable for 4WD vehicles.

In the summer of 2001 I drove the trail in three outings (legs 1, 2, and 3 below). Various individuals made up each of the groups in the three outings. Three people made it on all three of the legs: My good friend Gil Meacham in his 2000 red Cherokee and my wife (Mary Jo) and myself (Dale) in our 2000 White Cherokee. Gil was the "trail boss" having planned the adventure and then carefully plotted GPS waypoints on his laptop. Gil was the lead vehicle with the laptop and GPS (and Sharkey the Dalmatian) to guide the trip. Gil is also a ham operator (N7GEM) as are Mary Jo (KB7NJE) and myself (K7FW). Ed Bodnar (KD7NBH) was on Leg 1 & 2 of the trip. We would place another rig with a ham radio as the rear vehicle to make sure we always had communication from front to back of the group.

We collected GPS tracks during the trip and the plan is to create a CD with photos and CD tracks and travel hints. This should be available before the weather in 2002 permits again driving the trail. This will be made available to others wishing to explore this wonderful trail across Oregon.
