Return
a cannon to Arch Cape
For nearly one hundred years one of the Schooner Shark's cannons has
been on display in Arch Cape. The first cannon to surface was found in
January of 1898. This cannon had a resting place near the beach and
years later moved to a highway turnout, a very short walk from where it
was found. This cannon was on display in Arch Cape for 91 years, when
in1989 it was moved from the community.
At the May 19, 1989 Community Club meeting in Arch Cape John Cooper,
Directory of the Clatsop County Historical Society, said that he would
guarantee the return of the cannon to the community. A sign was placed
at the bottom of the historical marker spelling out the terms of
the agreement between the Community Club and the Historical Society
stating "At such time as the community of Arch Cape has a suitable,
secure, and accessible public building, it is the intent of the Clatsop
County Historical Society to place these items again in the area where
they washed ashore."
Now with the surfacing of two more cannons it is time that one of the
original cannons make that return to Arch Cape. The community
has begun site preparation for a new fire station in Arch Cape.
This site will be just a short walk from the location where the cannons
were found and one of the original cannons should be on display there.
This would be a
great site to display one of the Shark's cannons.
Please help return a cannon to the
Arch Cape community.
